When Joseph R. Kennedy returned home from World War II, his mother encouraged him to open a floor-covering specialty store.  At the time, limited inventories of tile and linoleum were sold exclusively at furniture and department stores like Guggenheimers, where Joe’s mother Agnes Rosenberger Kennedy worked. The two agreed that there was an opportunity to compete by offering customers a greater selection and better service at an affordable price.

Joe rented a storefront at 417 12th Street in Lynchburg and, in April of 1946, opened Standard Floor and Wall Covering Company.  No sooner did the sign go up then Ben Schewel of Schewel's Furniture Company stopped by to visit and make a suggestion. He said, “Joe, Standard Floor and Wall Covering Company is too long of a name. Why not put your name on the business?” And that's how Lynchburg’s first specialty floor-covering store became Kennedy’s.

In 1971, Joe’s daughter Karen joined Kennedy’s. When Joe retired a decade later, she took over the business and built upon her father's success. The company moved to its current location on Oakley Avenue in 1985. (See our FAQ or Contact information for directions).
